The Power of Naivety: How Not Knowing Is What Got You Here

There’s a strange, beautiful magic in being naïve.

When you’re young (or new) in business, you don’t know all the ways it could go wrong.
You don’t yet carry the weight of failure.
You haven’t learned to doubt yourself—or your dreams.

So you leap.
You launch.
You figure it out as you go.
And that naivety? That blind, bold energy? It fuels momentum most people spend years trying to recreate.

When You Don’t Know Better, You Just Do It

In 1997, I started my first web design company—without even owning a computer.
I didn’t know what the internet was. I’d never written a line of code.
And yet, there I was, starting a business in an industry I literally knew nothing about.

But I wasn’t scared.
Because there was no voice telling me I couldn’t.
No algorithm of fear, no overthinking. Just pure curiosity and hustle.

That’s the power of naivety.
You don’t talk yourself out of your dreams—because you haven’t yet learned all the reasons you should.

But Then… Experience Happens

Over time, you gain wisdom.
You’ve got real-life receipts of what didn’t work.
You’ve tasted failure, rejection, hard lessons.
You’ve gotten smarter—but sometimes more cautious, too.

What used to be “Why not?”
Now becomes “What if?”

And the fear creeps in, replacing that beautiful naivety with hesitation.
Not because you’re weaker—because you’re wiser.
But that wisdom can sometimes talk you out of what your younger self would’ve just gone for.

So How Do You Get It Back?

Here’s the secret:
You don’t need to unknow everything—you just need to trust your ability to navigate it.

Naivety got you to the start line.
Experience helps you finish strong.
But courage? That’s the bridge between the two.

To get that spark back:

  • Reconnect with your why
  • Take imperfect action
  • Surround yourself with brave energy
  • Be willing to look “naive” again—but this time, on purpose

Because here’s the thing:

It wasn’t luck.
It wasn’t ignorance.
It was your boldness. Your belief. Your ability to leap before the world told you you couldn’t.

And that? That’s still in you.
